Xinjiang ancient books exhibition in Beijing

( Post Time: April 06,2011 )

An exhibition in Beijing that featured the progress of protecting ancient books and documents of Xinjiang is on display at the National Library of China.

The exhibition has attracted droves of visitors, including Zhou Yongkang,a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

The exhibition, entitled "Western Legacy", presented 320 items of ancient books and cultural antiques from 23 preservation organizations across the country.

The objects on display span more than 2,000 years from the pre-Qin period to the Qing Dynasty. More than half the items are the only existing copies and many books are making their public debut.

Zhou Yongkang said the exhibition is proof that Xinjiang had always been part of the Chinese territory and home to diverse cultures.

The exhibition reflects close exchange and communication between Xinjiang and the rest of China throughout the history. The records also bear witness to the long-standing harmonious relations between different ethnic groups in the region.

It was the first exhibition by Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of its ancient books and antiques in Beijing since 1949. The two-month-long display opened on January 26th in Beijing and wrapped up on Thursday.

The exhibition, organized by the Ministry of Culture and the regional government, was held last year in a museum in Xinjiang and attracted more than 100,000 visitors.
