Beijing ranks 72nd on world's most livable cities list

( Post Time: February 24,2011 )

The Economist released a report according to its annual survey on the living situations of world cities. Canada's Vancouver ranked first for the fifth consecutive time, followed by Melbourne in Australia. Hong Kong and Beijing of China ranked 31st and 72nd, respectively, on the list, the Wenhui Newspaper reported on Feb. 22.

The results were concluded comprehensively from 30 elements of cities, including social stability, health care, culture, environment, education and infrastructure. Vancouver received 98 points — the same number it was awarded last year — and the city has held the top position on the list since 2007.

All together, 140 cities from the world are on the list, and there were few changes in the rankings of the top cities, except that Melbourne replaced Vienna as second place in the last year.

Pittsburgh ranks 29th and is the highest American city on the list, while Los Angeles ranks 44th, and New York ranks 56th.

Paris and London ranks 16th and 53rd on the list, respectively.

Osaka of Japan ranks 12th, the same with Geneva of Switzerland, and it was highest-ranking Asian city, while Tokyo ranks 18th.

Apart from Hong Kong, a total of 8 cities from the Chinese mainland were placed on the list, and they are Beijing (72nd), Tianjin (73rd), Suzhou (75th), Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dalian and Qingdao.
